From childhood, you were told to "fit in"
You probably can relate to my story.
I knew I was “different” when I was a little kid. When I was 5 years old, my friend Jinky and I were having fun in the playground turning around in circles like Wonder Woman and out of the blue she called me “gay.” I didn’t know what it meant, but I knew she THOUGHT it wasn’t good.
It wasn't until I was 11 years old that I started having feelings for other boys. I remember watching a couple friends wrestling on the ground, and I had this urge to wrestle with them just so I could be touched by them.
You know the feeling…it’s a longing and an urge just to be held, to be seen for who you truly are.
When I was 16 years old, I would cry myself to sleep because I knew that I would have to grow up, get married to a woman I didn’t love, and have a family just to keep up appearances. If you’ve ever been in this situation, you know how painful it is to feel trapped.
Luckily, I came out of the closet a few years later in college. I thought I would finally have a sense of belonging, but I didn’t. I started living a lifestyle I couldn’t support, just to fit in!
The challenges of living the gay "lifestyle"
Reading gay newspapers and magazines, doesn't it seem that gay life is all about partying at the clubs, meeting lots of men, and looking really good?
I was living in San Francisco and found the bars of the gay Castro District. Maybe, like me, you know what it’s like to barely make any money and spend most of it on beer busts and happy hour specials. Maybe all your friends showed you their latest designer clothes…Calvin Klein, Kenneth Cole, Diesel. And maybe you always ate out because you hardly ever spent time at home.
Have you ever had to get a cash advance on your credit card so you could pay for the lifestyle? I know I did. I wanted to feel like I could have it all.
I found myself working day in and day out, dreading the Monday morning alarm and counting the days until Friday night.
If you’re like me, you know what it’s like to get stuck in an endless cycle. Living to work, instead of working to live. The paycheck and the benefits become just good enough for you to stay, and you think you can’t find anything else in this economy. All of a sudden, you find that you're like a hamster on a wheel, spinning around day in and day out, not really noticing there’s a cage around you.
All the while, I especially wanted love in my life. But that was another problem.
Let’s face it. There are two main places to meet guys these days: the BARS and the INTERNET.
You probably have been frustrated by the revolving door of men who come in and out of your life! Even if you did have long-term relationships, you probably well know how each relationship had its own problems. You’ve probably been there…craving for a real, meaningful relationship where the guy understands you.
How I stumbled upon the answer to my problems
My moment of transformation happened when I walked into the Agape International Spiritual Center in Los Angeles. A friend invited me to the Sunday morning service. After a few minutes, I was in awe.
There on the stage was Reverend Dr. Michael Beckwith. You might’ve heard about him from the hit DVD and best-selling book The Secret. When I first heard him speak, this was YEARS BEFORE The Secret was made and before the Law of Attraction became such a world-wide phenomenon.
His message for that day was simple: Change your thinking, change your life.
You might think this is common sense. Or you might think, how could this little phrase make a difference? Believe me. It made a HUGE DIFFERENCE in my life.
That day I was introduced to the concept of PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT and SELF-GROWTH. Instead of feeling like I was flailing my arms, drowning, and a lifeguard was coming to save me (yes, a lifeguard would be a nice thing!), instead I was being taught how to swim!
You probably have met someone, attended a workshop, read a book or article, or found yourself in a situation where you felt inspired to be better than you were before. That’s how I felt. Inspired!
For the next few years, I immersed myself in classes, workshops, audiotapes and CDs, books and movies. I learned from Masters who were teaching and living these principles of success, in all areas of their lives.
As I applied these tools to my life, I started feeling happier about myself and my life.
And not only that, I saw CONCRETE RESULTS showing up!
I got out of credit card debt and accumulated thousands of dollars of savings in a few months.I met and married the man of my dreams who is handsome, kind, generous and my best friend. My partner and I bought our own home right in the city of San Francisco, our dream city! My status as a speaker and trainer heightened, bringing me to lead workshops for places like a United Nations conference in South Africa and speaking alongside Jesse Jackson, Jr. I left my hamster wheel job, got certified as a spiritual coach, and have been ecstatic to wake up because I get to make a difference in people’s lives. My circle of friends expanded and deepened. We could all relax, have lots of fun and at the same time support each others deepest dreams. Awkward and tense relationships started to heal. I related with others without any negative charge, and we started to get along very well. I became known as “the happy guy”, because my outlook on life was optimistic. This was a far cry from my teenage years where I rolled my eyes and threw out sarcastic remarks whenever I could. I combined my love of travel with my desire to make a difference in the world. I trained for and ran in six marathons (that’s 26.2 miles!) in the beautiful cities of New Orleans, Dublin, Ireland, Florence, Italy, and San Francisco. I did this as part of a program to raise money for AIDS research and programs, and I personally raised over $20,000 in the process.
These are only snippets of all the great things that have shown up in my life. But something still didn’t feel right. And then, in one of the workshops, the question hit me.
Where are all the gays?
I noticed that most of the workshop participants were straight people. I met a lesbian power couple during one of the exercises, and we said to each other, “Are we the only ones here?”
As a gay man, you’ve probably developed the ability to spot out the other gays, no matter where you might be in the world. You know that passing glance walking along the street or being in a crowd of people where your eyes connect and you both know. Or there’s the off-handed comment you catch someone make about Madonna, or Britney, or Mommie Dearest. Okay, maybe that last one was a bit more obvious.
And so I noticed other things too. The content of these workshops were straight-oriented. Speakers and facilitators would talk about guys and their wives, or women and their husbands. I was even told at one of these workshops that I just had to take the information and “translate” it into my own experience.
That’s when I decided to do something about it.
